NEW GAP

LIVE PROJECTS

WREN

NEW GAP has partnered with KNG (Kettering Nature Group) to launch a special Wildlife Rescue & Emergency Network (WREN).

WREN aims to weave together the many small, brilliant acts of rescue already happening across Northamptonshire into one connected, responsive system.

STAUNCH Campaign

We are supporting STAUNCH in opposing the planning of a colossal warehouse park on glebe land beside the protected Titchmarsh Nature Reserve — a vital wetland home to Golden Plovers, Red List birds, rare butterflies, and historic hedgerows. If approved, this reckless development will destroy irreplaceable habitats, flood resilience zones, and some of the UK’s best farmland.

The White Stork Project

We are funding part of this very exciting project in 2026.

We are supporting updates to the digital platform & knowledge hub to raise awareness of the project, as well as monitoring and tracking storks to provide robust data collection on survival, movement and breeding success, and generating the evidence base for the State of the Colony report.

Kettering Nature Group: Greenbank

Greenbank will be a community nature space to provide hands-on learning with the natural world as well as habitat creation. The project will transform an underused plot into a small but diverse landscape for wildlife and people, combining conservation, outdoor learning, and craft-based activities. More information to come on this project scheduled for the second half of 2026.

Restoring chalk grassland at Fleam Dyke

NEW GAP is funding this project to conserve and extend chalk grassland habitat at Fleam Dyke , a Site of  Special Scientific Interest (SSSI ) and scheduled monument . The Wildlife Trust for Beds, Cambs and Northants purchased the site in 2023 because the special chalk loving plants and animals that delight walkers on the footpath along the top of the dyke are in
danger of disappearing forever. The hum of insects, the sight and scent of wildflowers and extensive views across the landscape are at risk if we don’t act now.

Butterfly bund and wildflower meadows

This project aims to increase biodiversity across key pollinator habitats at Stanwick Lakes by creating and enhancing species-rich wildflower areas. This will be achieved through the establishment of two new lowland floodplain meadows and the enhancement of the existing butterfly bank through additional wildflower planting.
All meadow areas will be managed through an ongoing programme of cutting and removal of seeded hay to encourage wildflower establishment.

Monitoring will form a key part of the project. Baseline and follow-up surveys of plant species and pollinators will be undertaken, supported by trained volunteers, to measure changes in biodiversity and assess project success over time.

Northants Badger Group

This project will create a secure artificial badger sett and managed release site in Northamptonshire to support the rehabilitation and release of orphaned badger cubs. With release sites in short supply, suitable facilities are essential to give rescued cubs the opportunity to return to the wild rather than face euthanasia. The purpose-built sett will provide a safe environment for a carefully managed soft-release programme, including supplementary feeding, monitoring, and habitat management to help cubs adapt and thrive. Designed as a long-term conservation asset, the sett is expected to support multiple release groups over several years, potentially benefiting up to 18 orphaned cubs. Ongoing monitoring and data collection will contribute to wider badger conservation research and best-practice rehabilitation, with findings shared with Badger Trust.

Provision of educational book bundles to primary age organisations

NEW GAP is sponsoring Wondrous Words to supply 168 quality Usborne books as 42 separate book bundles to be delivered to local schools, nurseries and children’s charities to promote and inspire interest in the Earth, wildlife and outdoors.

Animals In Need

A Northamptonshire-based rescue charity that provides emergency care, rehabilitation and support for sick, injured and orphaned wildlife. Through its dedicated wildlife facilities, the charity helps animals recover and, where possible, return to the wild, playing an important role in wildlife welfare and conservation across the county.

NEW GAP has donated funds to support the purchase of dedicated wildlife rescue equipment and provisions for ongoing wildlife rehabilitation activities.
